When you read books about meditation you will come across phrases such as, “the purpose of meditation is to still the mind” or “when you meditate properly your mind will stop thinking.” Such phases can be very confusing and lead to intense disappointment as they generally make you feel a failure.
In this article we are going to look specifically at the relationship between the mind and the Light and Sound Energies through the use of a simple analogy. The Spiritual Energies are replaced with a television program and the mind as a commentary from a fellow viewer.
Throughout the whole scenario your eyes and ears are riveted to the set; it is your favorite program and you don’t want to miss a thing. You are aware of every picture and every word spoken by the tv characters. However, simultaneously your companion is offering their views about the plot.
Does this mean you cannot observe the picture? No!
Does this mean you cannot hear the words? No!
You don’t miss a thing!
Although you know your companion is talking you are taking very little notice.
On other occasions you may become more aware of your friend; they will distract you and your concentration on the program is interrupted. However, you can always turn your attention back to the tv at any time.
This is a perfect parallel with Meditating on the Light and Sound. If you are drawn to these Energies the mind may chatter but with very little consequence. Whereas, if you don’t have a Love for the Energies and want to remain separate and exercise some form of control you will naturally focus on your mind. The aim is to merge with the Light and Sound, not through effort but by letting go.
It is a simple case of, where do you really want to be?
